Q&A with Hollywood Curves’ Tailor James
Hollywood Curves Executive Vice President Tailor James is all too familiar with issues of fashion faux pas. As a former Playboy Playmate and International Model, James benefited from identifying solutions commonly used by stylists and designers to fix common wardrobe malfunctions. With her expertise and sensual fashion sense, James teamed with a respected product development team and manufacturer to produce Hollywood Curves, which currently consists of 26 items. Tailor James details her journey to company vice president and the wide range of roles she plays in building Hollywood Curves.
How did your experience as a Playboy Playmate and lingerie model play a role in designing Hollywood Curves?
Modelling for many years, I have had the benefit of working closely with top industry professionals, and have been privy to some of their creative approaches that contribute in creating that “perfect look”. Through countless photo shoots, I realized these choices are just as valuable in a woman’s everyday life as they are to creating that glamorous red carpet look. All women can relate to having that perfect outfit that they wanted to wear, but something just didn’t quite fall into place when they put it on. It’s imperative that every woman have that opportunity to look and feel comfortable and confident no matter what they’re wearing. Having had worn so many different styles and varieties of lingerie over the course of my career, more so than most women do in a lifetime, I have become quite knowledgeable and conscious with my experience of what makes lingerie and figure-enhancing products work and what doesn’t. As an alternative to costly and invasive surgery, Hollywood Curves enables women to look their best throughout all phases of their lives. Let’s face it, our bodies may change but our sex appeal shouldn’t have to.
What role did you play in the creation of Hollywood Curves?
I began researching where to find these figure enhancing products, but was usually led on a wild goose chase. I wasn’t satisfied with what was available on the market, if available at all. The market for these products is most definitely underserved. When looking for shape wear, a popular Hollywood must-have, I found it disappointing how they looked as a stand-alone item. Why does shape wear need to resemble something our of your grandma’s panty drawer? Not something you would want to reveal at the end of a hot date! There are a lot of products out there that are not practical and I needed to create a practical, useful product that actually works. Deciding to take matters into my own hands, I teamed up with business associates that I have made over the course of my career, and created Hollywood Curves. Hollywood Curves is a brand that provides functional, quality figure-enhancing solutions and products that eliminate those annoying, far too common wardrobe malfunctions.
How involved are you in the brand’s day to day operations and/or marketing?
When we put the idea together, we created the Hollywood Curves assortment and perfected the products with our key factories. Currently we are working on adding sexy lingerie with all the benefits of shape wear, to the assortment. From day one, I have been completely hands on from development, market research, fit, copy writing, packaging, design, photos-shoot styling, ad concepts, sample shopping to travelling worldwide for trade shows and presentations for all of our international distributors. Being a model, I understand the marketing aspect and have been able to promote all of which I have learned in the past.
What inspired you to take an executive role in the company?
I had a great idea, I found an exceptional company with over 25 years of experience in lingerie manufacturing, and together both having a vested interest we are able to create a strong viable company in this under saturated marketplace. I want Hollywood Curves to inspire women to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin without going under the knife. Beauty comes in all ages, shapes and sizes.
What are your expectations for the success of this brand?
Hollywood Curves offers a quality product that every woman can use to make them look and feel better at a reasonable price along with offering the newest greatest styles. We know that if we ship a quality product and customers are looking for it, it will sell. As we steadily roll through Spring into Summer, everyone’s mood brightens and thoughts of road trips to the beach sprout in all of our hearts. This carefree feeling is unfused into Made by Niki’s new SS14 collection. Designer Niki McMorrough sits down with us for this exclusive Q&A giving us insights into her new collection along with a generous sampling of images and inspirations direct from Niki:
Q&A with Niki McMorrough Niki, could you give us a brief overview of SS14 Almost Famous? Have you ever seen the Almost Famous Movie, with Kate Hudson? It captures a brilliant golden moment in 1970’s bohemian west coast rock n roll, when a mega rock band meets an innocent, sexy, chaotic, inspiring, heart-warming entourage and they go on the road trip of a lifetime. Made by Niki’s SS14 ‘Almost Famous’ collection was inspired by that summery road tour, festival feeling.
What are some of the key looks from the collection?
There are 37 pieces in the collection. Expect lots of fringes, sheer silks and flowers crafted into bras, knickers, kaftans, garlands and body pieces which make your boobs look bigger, your waist smaller and bottom more pinchable.
What are some familiar Made by Niki styles your customers will recognize?
Made by Niki fans will recognize the best-selling String bodysuits, this time in the season’s muted shades of coral and plain jet black which have been prevalent at Fendi, Stella McCartney and Elie Saab, among others.

Our customers love the flower fashion accessories – they can be worn as ready-to-wear accessories or as sexy body-garland bedroom pieces, and are made from millions of laser cut chiffon flower petals which were inspired by a hippie festival vibe. They are totally adjustable, so that one size fits everybody. How could you not fall in love with that?
And of course, you can’t have a festival fashion collection without a fur shearling collar that can be layered over anything (or nothing). This piece adds a rugged, luxurious ‘touch me’ texture to any outfit. It’s the perfect ‘Made by Niki’ piece, as it exudes a cheeky innocent sexiness, and keeps you warm when you’re out causing havoc in the middle of the night. Even our ‘bra’ stockists have invested quite heavily in the fur fashion pieces, as they are so easy to style with everything, and who doesn’t love the idea of soft shearling against sexy, bare skin? I think this piece has been a favourite ‘gift’ purchase, especially with men who are confused about bra sizes.

Lost in Wonderland’s New Fashion Film
Berlin-based Lost in Wonderland released a lovely fashion film showcasing the brand’s collection of intimates. The film follows two women in various scenes showing off the brand’s collection and packaging.

Must Have Pieces To Update Your Lingerie Wardrobe
Spring is officially here, and so are the spring lingerie fashions. Only slightly straying away from last years neon trend, the lingerie colour palette for 2014 is still bright and cheery- but is no longer so bright it could be directing traffic. Pastels and bright colours in shades like candy pink, lemon sorbet, tangerine and aqua. Florals, of course, are back for spring. So are fun cutesy prints and retro high waisted shorts. After nearly two years on the upswing the longline is officially a lingerie style that it here to stay, with nearly every UK boutique label rolling out their edition of this increasingly popular style.
If you are like me and have a large lingerie collection that keeps growing their is no way in the world that you wear each of your bras seasonably. Unlike seasonable clothes, bra and lingerie set fashion appears to move a little bit slower for this reason. Typically, lingerie fashion fans will usually purchase only a few select pieces each season. This is why designers tend to stagger their spring/summer designs and autumn/ winter designs. I tend to update with one statement piece per season, so I really only purchase about four bras a year. Because the DD+ lingerie brands that I shop for are high quality and tend to last, i’ve found myself with an extensive collection in a wide variety of color palettes that tell the fashion trend stories from the last few years. I’ve noticed that their really hasn’t been any dramatic variations. The lovely thing about fashion in any realm is that colour trends to transition but they are rather predictable for each season so this helps to keep older pieces still fashionably relevant.
That said, updating your wardrobe with a few new sexy lingerie sets can be a real mood booster! Not to mention it is a good time to check and see if your bra size has fluctuated at all. Spring is a good time to try on your old lingerie and sort out what fits and what does not fit. You may also want to donate some older styles to make room for your new purchases.
If you want to be up on the trends my advice is to buy at least one bra in the most popular color for the 2014 season, and then maybe an adorable print. What I like to do is purchase a style that I need, in a color that is current. For example, aside from the Panache line Fantasie bras have always been a close favorite for me, especially the Rebbeca design. This year Fantasie has released the Rebecca in a gorgeous magenta colour and I absolutely cannot wait to snatch one up.

Spring is a good time to try on your old lingerie and sort out what fits and what does not fit. You may also want to donate some older styles to make room for your new purchases.
If you want to be up on the trends my advice is to buy at least one bra in the most popular color for the 2014 season, and then maybe an adorable print. What I like to do is purchase a style that I need, in a color that is current. For example, aside from the Panache line Fantasie bras have always been a close favorite for me, especially the Rebbeca design. This year Fantasie has released the Rebecca in a gorgeous magenta colour and I absolutely cannot wait to snatch one up.
If you do not have the funds to do a full lingerie wardrobe overhaul this spring, stick with choices that are season-less and timeless. As fun as it is to keep up with colour and style trends, it is more important to have a functional lingerie wardrobe that works all year round. Instead of migrating towards very “current” colours, look for styles that come in classic colours and offer plenty of functionality. There is absolutely nothing wrong with sticking with the white, nudes, and blacks if that is what you prefer although that may be hard to do after seeing this years colour palette!

Samantha Chang Trunk Show at Lille Boutique
Lille Boutique will hosting a Trunk Show for New York City-based lingerie designer, Samantha Chang, On Friday, December 13, 2013 from 5pm to 8pm. The event features a meet-and-greet session with the designer, where she will be discussing her inspiration and the origins of her brand. She will also be accepting a limited number of private fitting appointments earlier in the day, so interested parties should contact the store for more information. Every guest who attends the event and makes a Samantha Chang purchase of $100 or more will be treated to a free goodie bag full of Lille gifts, including a Samantha Chang original design. (While supplies last: quantities are limited.) There will be a storewide discount of 10% off on Friday, as further incentive to shop the latest collections.
